PDX ,OR New Theatrical Burlesque/Circus Dance ensemble seeks "Rain Dolls"

"C'est La Guerre"
is seeking 4 dancers for a new dance/performance ensemble
"The Rain Dolls".
Though rooted in burlesque style this ensemble is NOT strip
oriented.

What this is : a 5 member ensemble that embraces a vintage ( PRE-1940's) dark aesthetic -
A random selection of influences :
Victorian Circus,
Steampunk,
Weimar Cabaret,
Storyville/Southern Gothic,
VERY Vintage Fetish ( no vinyl...none....at all...ever.)
However, we will not be anchored to vintage music.
At this time we are looking to build the ensemble- as it progresses, there will be
the opportunity to perform on a solo basis -and even explore burlesque performance.
right now though, we are building a solid group.
It cannot be stressed enough that this ensemble
will be themed with set characters that written for you.
You will be able to contribute-- but ultimately, the final call will be with the artistic director.

What this is not: The Pussycat Dolls ,Cutesy Retro Burlesque
or yet another underwear clad dance ensemble that prances to "Fever"--
To quote our artistic director "I'd sooner kill myself".

Qualified applicants possess:
-dance and stage experience
-an ability/willingness to be directed and choreographed and costumed.
-a high comfort level in wearing skimpy costuming.
-a willingness to shed one's usual image for a stage persona
-knowledge of Tom Waits and all he implies.( o.k. that is half true...but it is important)
-fearlessness
-a strong interest in any of the influences listed above
-an ability to commit immediately to
2 weekly rehearsals during the first month (1 weekly after the 1st show)
and at this time- 1 monthly performance ( 1st show July 3rd) .

**There is no height or weight standard
although, we are seeking one member who is 5'10 or
over and can dance well in heels.

What you get for putting up with all this:
-guaranteed pay for performances.
-the opportunity to perform in quality shows.
-the opportunity to be well promoted.
-great photos of you in fantastic costumes.

If you can a.) deliver and b.) are interested
send a recent photo, simple resume and cover letter
( tell us about you as a person and why you are interested )
to
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
***DO NOT SEND ANYTHING ON MY SPACE****
We're serious...we won't count it ...
We will be meeting with potential candidates and casting
the show in the next 2 weeks -
rehearsals will begin the last week of May.

****We are also seeking 2 assistants who are interested in playing wardrobe,
being stage managers and getting on stage in prancy costumes to play along on occasion....
no dance experience required- just a desire to join the circus and a stronger desire to show off.

Coming this Juillet to La Villes en Roses...

Coffin Car

Ok - shamless plug moment....

My husband is selling his coffin car to make room for other projects - like his greaser bug with a 40's Ford truck bed. Anyway, it's up on eBay and below is a link to a vid we did of it a while ago.

Darrrrrrkkkkk Kabarrrret!!!! MEOWWWW!

Dark Kabaret (www.DarkKabaret.com)-A One-Night Stand of Vaudeville and Burlesque Wonder at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.

San Francisco, CA. October 2, 2006 – Dark Kabaret will be presented at the Great American Music Hall on November 18, 2006. The illustrious and musical Dark Kabaret, blends feverish vaudeville with the vibrancy of a modern song-and-dance. It is the setting of magic, mystery and romance, echoing the frenzied bitter-sweetness of a time that was much sexier and addictive than our own, striving to surge people into a frantic gaiety. This show is not the calm before the storm; it is the storm itself in all its majestic and intense beauty.

Dark Kabaret is staged in a torrid nightclub atmosphere where a mincing master of ceremonies – Paul Nathan – creates an illicit welcome to the cabaret’s guests, promising them naughty songs and enticingly half-dressed girls, all of which are indeed delivered in spades. It captures a foreboding atmosphere but dwells only incidentally on doom and focuses instead on decadence. It quickly becomes evident that Dark Kabaret is a thrilling assemblage of daring carnival-esque music by Eric McFadden and Eric Burdon (The Animals) set against the tinseled background of delicious and terrible madness.

Dark Kabaret is directly influenced by Nathan’s explorations of the globe. Each act is hand picked by Paul allowing for a dizzying, earth-quaking shock of magnificent, unique talent.

Dark Kabaret is a brassy pleasure-haunt reminiscent of Weimar Era Berlin with wild nightlife and joyful sin. Paul creates a love affair between the audience and the stage. The romance inevitably blossoms as ladies, half-tart and half-innocent, provide a raffish nightclub atmosphere.

THE PERFORMERS

Paul Nathan - Emcee (www.firemagic.com) a professional magician providing high-end entertainment. He has appeared on HBO, MTV, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and Star Trek Voyager. Paul has performed in New York City, L.A., Berlin, Hong Kong and nearly every city along the way. He has performed for royalty, celebrities, dignitaries, presidents and common people alike.

Eric McFadden – Musical Inspiration (www.EricMcFadden.com) McFadden may just be one of the hardest working performers in the business. Fresh off a European tour with Eric Burdon and the New Animals, McFadden returns to the states and hits the ground running. He will finish out this season on the road with the Eric McFadden Trio in support of their new album, Joy of Suffering.

Eric Burdon – Musical Headliner (www. EricBurdon.com) Eric Burdon's life has been a musical journey matched by few other performers in rock music history. He has gone from the driving force of the grittiest British Invasion band, to pioneering the San Francisco psychedelic rock scene, to fronting WAR - the biggest funk band of the 1970's, to cutting an LP with an early influence, jazz-blues great Jimmy Witherspoon, to coming full-circle and reuniting his original band, The Animals, for a series of projects and world-wide tours, to forming new groups of “Animals” and releasing a series of studio CDs, live CD’s, a DVD, and his second autobiography, which was translated in several languages.

Frank Olivier – World Renowned Juggler (www.FunnyFrank.com) Frank has been performing professionally for 20 years. Upon graduating from high school, Frank attended Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Clown College. He has performed in Sugar Babies with Mickey Rooney and has been seen on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

Steve Brown – Yo Yo Ninja (www.SteveBrownIsMyHero.com) Steve Brown is now one of the small handfuls of people who control the entire yo-yo industry. He is not pleased about this, but as the task has fallen to him, he maintains that he will uphold it until his nerves give out or a bus hits him. He holds the patent for counterweight style play, which now has its own division at the World Yo-Yo Contest. He has designed over a dozen yo-yos without the benefit of formal engineering training, and he is arguably one of the best looking men in the industry.

Dark Garden Corsetry – Absinthe Drenched Fashion Show (www.DarkGarden.com) this show is like sipping licorice flavored elixir under the breezing canopy of an enchanted tree. This fashion show will make you beg for more and whisper sweet nothings to someone special while preaching the dangers of dressing inappropriately.

Did Mucha Inspire the pin-up culture?

Checkout Alphonse Mucha.... I think he really may have inspired pin-up culture. His women were hot and sexy and curvy... but they were turn of the century. Maybe the revolution was inspiried by him which inspired flappers which inspired pinup girls? Just a thought... I'll post a Mucha picture in the album here and ya'll can let me know what you think.
